The history of Pride Month

Pride Month traces its roots back to the Stonewall Riots, which occurred in June 1969 in New York City. These riots were a series of spontaneous demonstrations by members of the LGBTQ+ community. They were in response to a police raid at the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar in Greenwich Village. The raid and subsequent protests ignited a movement, catalyzing the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. It also marked a pivotal moment in the struggle for equality.

In the years following the Stonewall Riots, activists and community leaders organized events to commemorate the uprising and promote LGBTQ+ rights. The first Pride marches took place in New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago in 1970, on the anniversary of the riots. These marches laid the foundation for what would become Pride Month, a global celebration of LGBTQ+ identities, rights, and achievements.

Pride Month is more than just a celebration; it is a powerful reminder of the resilience and strength of the LGBTQ+ community. It serves as an opportunity to:
